Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make a season feel special.

Fall has always felt like a season of transition. The days get shorter, the air gets cooler, and suddenly everything seems to move a little faster as we head toward the holidays. Between work, family, and all the things I seem to volunteer myself for, it’s easy to get so caught up in what’s next that I forget to appreciate what’s happening right now.
So I’ve been thinking about the little things that are making me happy lately. Nothing particularly groundbreaking or life-changing. Just those small moments, experiences, and discoveries that make an ordinary day a little better.
Here are ten things I’m appreciating this fall.
1. Baseball, Even in the Offseason
If you know me, you know I love baseball. And while the season may be winding down, I’m already looking forward to next year because we officially became Chicago White Sox season ticket holders!
We went with a 20-game package, and I’m ridiculously excited about having so many games to look forward to. Baseball has become one of our favorite family experiences, and there’s something wonderful about spending an afternoon at the ballpark, enjoying the atmosphere, and making memories together.
Now I just have to patiently wait for spring.
2. Getting Something Fun in the Mail
Remember when checking the mailbox was exciting? Before it became a collection of bills, advertisements, and things you probably don’t want to open?
I’ve been rediscovering how much I love sending and receiving actual mail. Handwritten notes, postcards, little surprises, and pretty stationery all make me ridiculously happy.
It’s actually part of what inspired me to create The Well Balanced Mail Club, which I’m launching in January. I love the idea of giving people something to look forward to finding in their mailbox each month, especially when so much of our lives happens on screens.
3. The Excitement of Planning Something Fun
Sometimes the anticipation is almost as enjoyable as the experience itself.
I’ve been looking forward to some upcoming adventures, including a trip to Las Vegas in November. I’m going for a healthcare conference, but I also decided to treat myself to a solo VIP experience at The Sphere to see The Wizard of Oz.
As someone who is naturally introverted, doing things alone can feel a little intimidating. But I’m learning that I don’t need to wait for someone else to join me to enjoy an experience.
And I’m especially excited about this one.
4. Finding a Really Good Freebie
I don’t think I’ll ever outgrow the excitement of getting something for free.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s a sample tucked into an order, a loyalty reward, or an unexpected little gift. There’s something about getting a surprise that makes my day.
I’ve always had a frugal side, and even though I appreciate nice things, I still love the thrill of a good deal. Sometimes the smallest freebies are the most fun.
I’m already looking forward to putting together a birthday freebie guide next spring, which will give me a perfectly reasonable excuse to see just how many birthday treats I can collect.
5. Cozy Evenings at Home
As much as I love traveling and trying new things, there’s something especially comforting about being home when the weather turns cooler.
A soft blanket, comfortable clothes, something good to watch, and absolutely nowhere I need to be? That sounds pretty wonderful.
I’ve been trying to appreciate those quieter moments instead of feeling like I should always be doing something productive. Some evenings are meant for accomplishing things. Others are meant for curling up on the couch and doing very little.
I’m learning to enjoy both.
6. Dreaming About the Year Ahead
I know it’s only October, but I’ve already started thinking about 2027.
I have some big goals for next year, and I’ve been having fun imagining what it might look like if I really committed to pursuing them. Some are related to my career, others involve health and fitness, and plenty are about making more time for experiences and family memories.
There’s something energizing about having things to work toward. I don’t need January 1 to start making progress, but I do love the feeling of a fresh chapter on the horizon.
7. Little Creative Projects
I’ve been rediscovering how much I enjoy making things simply because they’re fun.
Lately, that has meant experimenting with watercolor ideas, stationery, stickers, and all the little creative details that will eventually come together in the Mail Club.
I spend so much of my professional life thinking about strategy, technology, and solving complicated problems that it’s refreshing to work on something where the only real objective is to make something beautiful or enjoyable.
And there’s something satisfying about creating something tangible that you can actually hold in your hands.
8. Having Something to Look Forward to as a Family
One thing I’ve become more intentional about is making memories together.
We have a goal of visiting all 30 Major League Baseball parks before our daughter heads off to college. It’s an ambitious little family bucket list, but I love that it gives us a reason to explore new cities and plan adventures.
Not every memory has to involve a big vacation, though. Sometimes it’s a baseball game, a spontaneous outing, or an ordinary afternoon that turns into something memorable.
I’m trying to make more room for those moments.
9. The Little Luxuries of Everyday Life
I’ve been thinking a lot about the difference between buying things and actually enjoying them.
It’s surprisingly easy to accumulate stuff without stopping to appreciate any of it. Lately, I’ve been trying to be more intentional about enjoying the things I already have.
Using the nice mug instead of saving it. Lighting the candle instead of letting it sit on a shelf. Taking time to enjoy a favorite treat rather than rushing through it while answering emails.
None of these things are particularly extravagant, but they can make an ordinary day feel a little more special.
10. Remembering That Life Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Be Good
This fall hasn’t been perfect. There have been disappointments, busy days, plans that didn’t work out, and moments when I’ve felt completely overwhelmed.
But there have also been wonderful things happening alongside all of that.
I’ve been reminded that a good life isn’t necessarily one where everything goes according to plan. Sometimes it’s simply a life where you keep finding things to appreciate, even when things feel messy.
And maybe that’s what being well balanced really means.
Not having everything figured out, but making room for the things that bring you joy along the way.
What Little Things Are Making You Happy?
I’d love to know what’s bringing you joy this season. Maybe it’s a favorite fall tradition, a new discovery, something you’re looking forward to, or just a quiet moment you wish you could bottle up and save.
Whatever it is, I hope you find a little time to enjoy it.
Because sometimes the little things really are the big things.
